         Martin Wickramasinghe

Martin Wickramasingha,the greatest Sri lankan writer of the last century,was born in koggala in 1890.The house in which he was born has been renovated and forms a part of the museum.The late author’s personal belongings and original furniture have been well preserved and carefully arranged in the rooms. The visitor gets the impression that the author has just stepped out for a stroll along the koggala beach.In the gallery Martin Wickramasinghe's life and times are presented through photographs.
painting,sketches,souvenirs and awards he had received.Copies of published works and hand written manuscripts are also found here.All these help to create an image of the man and the writer and by - gone times. His ashes are interred in a grass covered mound to the right of the house. The samadhi where his ashes are interred,is symbolic of his rootedness in the rural culture and his simple life style. The items on display in the Museum of folk Culture near the house in which Martin Wickramasinghe was born include artifacts related to Buddhism,folk religious practices,pottery,and folk dance.There is also a unique collection of masks,musical instruments,costumes,jewellery and many other exhibits of interest .It also has many agricultural implements and carts of different types.There is an Ambalama a resting place which is surrounded by sturdy trees.There are many varieties of trees here,some common to the south of the country and some not so common.There are many birds that are common,exotic and migrant coming here for food and rest.place is enchanting in its varied foliage - a fine place to relax and picnic...
